Life with the Vekto Steam Mop S20

The mop and bucket stays in the cupboard. The floor is dry in a minute.

Plug in, twenty seconds, round the kitchen, back in the cupboard. Here is what changes in the first week.

A woman in a bright kitchen-diner pushing the Vekto Steam Mop S20 across laminate, a toddler and a dog on the dry side behind her
You do the floor more often

There is no bucket to fill, no mucky water to pour away and no mop to dry. Twenty seconds from the plug to steam, so a quick go after the dog comes in replaces the Saturday job you kept putting off.

Bare feet and crawlers straight back on it

Tap water goes in, hot steam comes out, and the pad takes the dirt away. Nothing is left on the floor, and it is dry in about a minute. No waiting in the doorway with a toddler on your hip.

Sticky laminate and grey grout

The tacky patch by the cooker, gone. The grout, white again.

If you have laminate or tiles, what you really want is the floor to feel clean under bare feet, not just look it for five minutes.

The Vekto Steam Mop S20 handheld unit pointed at a line of kitchen grout, white behind the steam and grey ahead of it
Sticky comes off with heat, not scrubbing

Hot steam softens the dried-on juice, the trodden-in mud and the film a bottle of floor cleaner leaves behind. The microfibre pad lifts it away. Look at the pad afterwards and you will see what the mop and bucket was moving around.

The grout you used to do on your knees

Lift the steam unit out, point it along the line, wipe with a cloth. The grey comes out of the grout without bleach, and the same unit does the hob, the shower screen and the taps.

The question everyone asks

Will it stop steaming after a year, like the last three?

Every steam mop review ends the same way: light on, no steam, and the shop wants to know if you registered it. Here is the straight answer.

The Vekto Steam Mop S20 standing upright in a tiled hallway with its handheld unit lifted out beside it
  1. 01
Nothing to split, nothing to pump

It runs on tap water alone. No detergent tank to split, no pump handle to work up and down, no bottle of own-brand solution to keep buying. Two steam speeds on a switch, and steam that keeps coming while the tank has water in it.

  2. 02
Scale is the usual killer, and it is a two-minute job

Most steam mops die because scale builds up in the heater. Tap water is fine in this one. In a hard-water area, run a descaler through it now and then, the same as the kettle, and it keeps steaming for years.

  3. 03
Covered for five years, no registration

If it ever stops steaming inside five years, you get it repaired or replaced, free. No 28-day form, no proof of registration, no arguing with a shop. Just a message to {email}.

The rest of it

Hot in twenty seconds, two speeds for two kinds of floor, and a handheld for everything else.

Steam

Ready in 20 seconds. Then up to 25 minutes without a refill.

A 2000 W heater has steam at the pad twenty seconds after you switch on, so a quick go round the kitchen is a quick go, not a wait. The 400 ml tank gives up to 25 minutes of steam, enough for the whole downstairs in most homes, and you can see the water level through the side and top it up at any point.

Two speeds

Low for the laminate, high for the tiles. Dry in about a minute either way.

Laminate wants a fine steam and a quick pass, so the board never takes water in. Tiles, lino and the bits stuck on by the cooker want more. The switch gives you one or the other. The pivoting head turns flat to go under the kickboards and the radiator, and the 25 cm pad covers a kitchen in a few passes.

Press the catch and the steam unit comes out of the mop as a handheld steam cleaner. Point it along the grout, at the ring on the hob, along the track of the shower door or round the base of the loo, and wipe with a cloth. Click it back in and it is a mop again. Snap the glider on under the head and it freshens the hallway rug too.

How it works

The DrySteam™ system: hot steam in, dirt out, a dry floor behind you.

A steam mop comes down to three things: how quickly it heats up, how much steam the floor gets, and whether it leaves the floor wet. Here is how the Vekto Steam Mop S20 handles each one.

  1. 01
    Hot in 20 seconds

A 2000 W heater turns tap water into steam twenty seconds after you switch on, and keeps it coming for up to 25 minutes on one 400 ml fill. Plenty for the whole downstairs without stopping.

  2. 02
The right amount for the floor

Two steam speeds on a switch. Low puts a fine steam through the pad for laminate and sealed wood. High is for tiles, lino, stone and whatever is stuck on by the cooker. Most steam mops have one setting, and it is too much for laminate.

  3. 03
The pad lifts it, the floor dries

Heat softens the dirt, the microfibre pad takes it away, and what is left is a thin warm mist that is gone in about a minute. Lift the unit out for the grout and the hob, and snap the glider on for the rug.

Covered for five years, with 60 days to try it in your own home.

A floor fitter's view

A floor fitter explains why the Vekto Steam Mop S20 works

Twenty-four years laying laminate and LVT, and called back to the floors a steam mop has ruined. This is the one he tells his customers to buy.

A floor fitter kneeling on a half-laid laminate floor with the Vekto Steam Mop S20 standing beside him
I get called back to floors that have lifted, and nine times out of ten the owner tells me the same thing. The steam mop left puddles, or it got run over a click floor that was never sealed at the joints. Steam does not ruin a floor. Water sitting on it does. The Vekto Steam Mop S20 is the first one I have been happy to leave with a customer. The low speed on laminate puts a fine steam through the pad and the board is dry before you have turned round. Tap water and no cleaner, so there is no film on the surface to dull it. The unit lifts out for the grout and the kickboards, which is where the muck actually lives. And five years of cover with no form, which is more than some floors get from the fitter. This is the one I tell people to buy.

What it really costs

What clean floors really cost

Three ways to a clean kitchen floor, and what each one costs.

Option 1The mop, the bucket and a bottle of cleaner every monthA bottle a month, plus £25 to £60 for a handheld

Fill the bucket, mop the dirt round, pour the mucky water down the drain, dry the mop. The floor is wet for twenty minutes and the grout still needs doing on your knees. So you buy a separate handheld steamer for the bathroom as well.

Option 2The £140 big name£139.99, then the registration form

15 minutes of steam a fill, so the downstairs is two fills. No handheld on the Klik n' Flip, no glider in the box. Twelve months of cover, plus a year only if you fill in the form within 28 days of buying it.

Option 3Vekto Steam Mop S20£129.95£169.99

Hot in 20 seconds, up to 25 minutes a fill, two steam speeds and a floor that is dry in about a minute. The handheld lifts out for the grout and the hob, and the glider and spare pad are in the box. Tap water only, nothing to split. Covered for five years with no form, with 60 days to try it at home. Delivered free and fast from our UK warehouse.

Crawler

Eight-month-old who licks the kitchen floor, so the floor spray went in the bin the day this arrived. Did the whole of downstairs after his tea and the boards were fine to put him back on by the time I'd rinsed the pad. Nothing on his hands but crumbs now.

Quarry tiles

Victorian terrace, quarry tiles in the kitchen, and the lines between them had been grey since my mother-in-law moved in with us. Took the little unit off and went along them while the football was on. My husband thought I'd had someone in. Did the hob while it was still hot, then the cubicle door track upstairs. Her carer does the bathroom floor with it on a Tuesday now because it isn't heavy, which is the bit I didn't expect.

Good, keep the extension lead handy

Hampshire water is like rock, so it gets a dose of kettle descaler once a month. Lounge, hall and kitchen-diner mean swapping sockets about halfway round, which is the only grumble. Steam comes through in seconds and the lino looks like it did when it went down. Four stars for the lead.

Arthritis

Can't wring out a mop any more and hands and knees are out of the question at 71. This is light enough to push one-handed and the pad goes into the machine with the tea towels. My daughter had it unpacked and steaming in five minutes, and the conservatory tiles have not looked this good since her dad did them.

Shower screen

Bought it for the kitchen but the handheld bit has lived in the bathroom ever since. The crust round the hot tap and the black in the track of the cubicle door wiped off after a few seconds of steam. Soft water up here so I've not had to descale it yet.

Steaming in two minutes

Click the tube in, fill it from the tap, plug it in. That is the whole set-up.

  2. 02Fill it from the tap

Up to 400 ml of tap water with the measuring cup, cap on. You can see the level through the side, so you know when to top it up.

  3. 03Plug in, wait 20 seconds, go

Pick low for laminate or high for tiles, start at the far corner and work back towards the socket. For the rug, snap the glider on under the head. For the grout, lift the unit out.

Is it right for you?

Is the Vekto Steam Mop S20 right for you?

For people who want the hard floors done properly without a bucket, and are fed up with steam mops that stop steaming at month thirteen.

The Vekto Steam Mop S20 suits you if

  • You have laminate, tiles, lino or sealed wood downstairs and you hate the mop and bucket
  • You have a baby crawling or a dog that licks the floor, and you want no cleaner left on it
  • You want the grout, the hob and the shower screen done with the same machine
  • You are sick of a floor that stays wet for twenty minutes after mopping
  • You have had a steam mop that stopped steaming, and you want one that is covered for five years

Choose something else if

  • Your floors are unsealed or waxed wood: steam and bare wood do not mix
  • You want a carpet washed, not freshened: the glider lifts the pile, it does not lift stains
  • You have a big open-plan house and do not want to change socket once: the cord is 4.8 m
  • You want a cordless mop: this one plugs in, and that is where the 2000 W comes from

If the first list sounds like your floors, this is the steam mop. And you have 60 days to try it at home.

Common questions

Still deciding if the Vekto Steam Mop S20 suits your floors?

The usual killer of a steam mop is scale in the heater, and the usual answer is twelve months of cover and a registration form. This one is covered for five years on the heater, the pump and the body, with no form. Tap water is fine. In a hard-water area, run a descaler through it now and then, the way you do the kettle, and it keeps steaming. If it ever stops, you get it repaired or replaced, free.
